Sailing Catamarans

Sailing level, with a glass of wine resting steady on the table and the whole horizon around you. That is the gentle magic of a sailing catamaran.

What a sailing catamaran is

A sailing catamaran uses two hulls joined by a bridge deck with a salon, galley and cockpit on one level. The twin hull design heels far less than a monohull, provides a stable platform at anchor and offers shallow draft compared with most keel sailboats.

Who it suits

Sailing catamarans suit couples and families who want to cruise under sail in comfort, including those planning extended voyages or seasons in the islands. The open, single level layout makes life aboard feel spacious and connected.

Typical sizes and layouts

Cruising sailing catamarans commonly range from about 35 to 60 feet. Typical layouts include staterooms in each hull, often with a full hull owner's suite, a salon and galley that open to the cockpit, a forward trampoline, and twin engines for maneuvering.

Strengths and tradeoffs

Strengths: stability, abundant space, shallow draft and comfort for living aboard.

Tradeoffs: a wide beam that can require a larger slip, mast height under bridges, and different handling than a monohull in some conditions.

On Tampa Bay and the Gulf Coast

Shallow draft makes a sailing catamaran a lovely fit for anchorages behind the barrier islands. Confirm slip width at your marina, and check mast height against bridges on your planned route.

How it compares

A sailing catamaran offers far more living space and less heel than a monohull of the same length. Compared with a power catamaran, it trades speed for quiet, wind driven travel and long range on minimal fuel.

Buying tips

  • Inspect both hulls, the bridge deck and the rig.
  • Ask about the charter history, since many catamarans spend time in charter fleets.
  • We highly recommend an independent survey on every deal.
