The short answer
Can you get a warranty on a used boat?
Yes, you can get a warranty on a used boat. What most owners call a used boat warranty is an extended service contract. It pays for covered mechanical and electrical breakdowns after the factory warranty ends, less your deductible. It is not insurance, and it does not cover accidents, storms, theft or problems that existed before coverage started. Eligibility depends on the boat's age, hours and condition; we confirm with your quote.

Repair risk
Used boats carry more repair risk
On a used boat the factory warranty has usually ended, and engines, generators, drives and electronics are among the most expensive parts of a boat to repair. One major failure can cost more than the coverage itself.
- Engines and drives
- Generators and air conditioning
- Electrical and onboard systems
- Helm electronics
Coverage
What a used boat warranty covers
Coverage is built from packages. You choose engine coverage, vessel coverage, or both, then add options for the equipment your boat actually has. Only the components listed in your contract are covered.
Engines
Diesel systems
Drives and lower units
Onboard systems
Electronics and navigation
Comfort and power options

Coverage built around the boat you actually run.
What is not covered
- Problems that existed before coverage started
- Accidents, impact, grounding, storms, sinking, fire or theft
- Corrosion, contamination and failures caused by them
- Routine maintenance and wear items such as batteries, impellers and raw water pumps
- Exhaust components and fasteners
- Rental, charter, racing, tournament or commercial use
- Repairs done without authorization
- Loss of use, travel costs and other indirect losses
Your contract lists every exclusion. Read it before you buy.
What affects the price
Every quote is built from the boat in front of us. The main pricing factors:
- Vessel type and length
- Engine type, brand and configuration (single, twin, triple or quad)
- Model year and engine hours
- Coverage packages and add ons you choose
- Term length and deductible
- Where and how the boat is used and stored

Know the difference
Insurance and a service contract do different jobs
Most owners carry both. Insurance protects against accidents and outside events. A service contract protects against breakdowns.
| Situation | Boat insurance | Service contract |
|---|---|---|
| Accidents, collisions, grounding | Insurance | Not covered |
| Storm, fire, sinking, theft | Insurance | Not covered |
| Liability to others | Insurance | Not covered |
| Engine or generator mechanical failure | Usually not covered | Covered when listed |
| Electrical and onboard system failure | Usually not covered | Covered when listed |
| Routine maintenance | Not covered | Not covered |
How a claim works
- 1Stop using the boat and prevent further damage.
- 2Contact the plan administrator or the selling dealer before any repair.
- 3Take the boat to a licensed marine repair facility with your contract number and maintenance receipts.
- 4The shop diagnoses the problem and gets a claim authorization before work starts.
- 5Covered repairs are paid under the plan. You pay your deductible and anything not covered.
After hours breakdowns: protect the boat, then report the claim the next business day.
Maintenance records protect your coverage
Claims are reviewed against your service history. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule and keep:
- Engine and generator service done by a licensed marine shop, with dates and hours
- Oil, impeller and filter changes
- Receipts for parts and fluids if you do your own maintenance
- Any prior repairs and the parts that were replaced
- A recent marine survey or prepurchase inspection, if you have one

Good records today make a smooth claim tomorrow.

Coverage is provided through an extended service contract, not an insurance policy or a manufacturer warranty. Coverage, eligibility, limits, deductibles and exclusions are set by the issued contract. Purchase is not required to buy or finance a boat. Not available in all areas.
