Dual Console Boats

A windshield to shield you from spray, comfortable seats for every guest, and the freedom to cast a line whenever you choose. The dual console is a graceful middle ground.

What a dual console is

A dual console boat has two consoles on either side of the deck: one for the helm and one for a companion. Between them, a walk through windshield opens to a bow seating area. The design combines the protection of a runabout with much of the open, practical layout of a center console. On many models, the companion console hides a head, and the helm console houses storage.

Who it suits

Dual consoles suit couples and families who want a versatile boat for cruising, swimming, watersports and some light fishing. They are especially appealing to owners who often have guests aboard, since every seat feels close to the conversation.

Typical sizes and layouts

Dual consoles generally range from about 18 to 40 feet. Typical features include:

  • Twin consoles with a full windshield
  • Bow seating that converts into a sun pad on many models
  • An aft bench or lounge, often with a fold out swim platform area
  • A head compartment in the port console on larger models
  • Rod holders and livewells on fishing oriented versions

Strengths and tradeoffs

**Strengths**

  • Better wind and spray protection than a center console
  • Comfortable seating for families and groups
  • A versatile platform for cruising, swimming and fishing
  • An enclosed head on many models

**Tradeoffs**

  • Less 360 degree fishing access than a center console
  • The windshield can make movement fore and aft a little tighter
  • Limited overnight space

Using it on Tampa Bay and the Gulf Coast

On Tampa Bay a dual console is a natural choice for sandbar afternoons, a morning of inshore fishing and a sunset run home. The windshield keeps everyone more comfortable on breezy afternoons, and outboard power on many models makes shallow water near the islands more accessible.

Buying tips

  • Sit in every seat. Comfort and legroom differ widely.
  • Check the windshield, the head compartment and hatches for leaks.
  • Review engine hours and service records.
  • We highly recommend an independent survey on every deal.
