Spray in the air, the hum of the engine and the freedom to explore any shoreline on a whim. A personal watercraft brings an extra spark to life on the water.
What a PWC is
A personal watercraft is a small, sit on top craft powered by an inboard engine and water jet drive, steered with handlebars. Models range from compact recreational craft to touring and performance versions, and many yacht owners carry one as a water toy or a quick tender.
Who it suits
PWCs suit active owners who enjoy exploring, towing or simply riding, and yacht owners who want a second way to reach shore or a playful toy at anchor.
Typical features
Most PWCs seat one to three riders. Features vary by type and can include storage compartments, a reboarding step, a tow point, audio and electronic speed or braking control.
Strengths and tradeoffs
Strengths: nimble, compact and a delightful companion to a larger yacht.
Tradeoffs: limited range and storage, exposure to sun and spray, and the need for careful, courteous operation.
On Tampa Bay and the Gulf Coast
PWCs are a lively way to explore the islands and calm stretches of the bay. Respect no wake, manatee and seagrass protection zones, and know Florida's boater education requirements.
How it compares
A PWC is quicker and more nimble than a RIB tender but carries fewer people and less gear. Many yacht owners carry both: a tender for guests and provisions, and a PWC for exploring. A jet boat offers similar propulsion with more seating.
Buying tips
- Ask about hours, saltwater flushing and service history.
- Confirm that your yacht's platform or davits can carry the weight.
