Bay Boats

Early light on the grass flats, a quiet approach to a tailing redfish, and the option to run nearshore when the bay is calm. The bay boat is made for this coast.

What a bay boat is

A bay boat is a shallow draft fishing boat built for bays, estuaries and nearshore water. It typically uses a modified V hull that drafts shallow enough for skinny water but rides better in a chop than a pure flats boat. Bay boats generally have a center console, a raised casting deck forward, and plenty of fishing amenities.

Who it suits

Bay boats suit anglers who fish inshore most of the time but want the ability to venture nearshore on good days. Many families also enjoy them for cruising and sandbar visits.

Typical sizes and layouts

Most bay boats range from about 18 to 26 feet. Common features include casting decks, livewells, rod storage, a trolling motor mount, a poling platform on some models and a single outboard.

Strengths and tradeoffs

Strengths: shallow draft, a versatile hull, good fishing layouts and simple outboard power.

Tradeoffs: a wetter ride than a deep V center console in rough water, limited weather protection and little storage for overnight use.

Bay boat or flats boat?

A bay boat trades a little shallow water capability for a drier ride and more versatility. A flats boat drafts even shallower and is quieter on the flats but is less comfortable in open water. See our [flats boat overview](/boat-types/flats-boat).

On Tampa Bay and the Gulf Coast

Tampa Bay's grass flats, mangrove shorelines and nearshore reefs make the bay boat a local favorite. Know the depths, respect seagrass and manatee zones, and watch the tides.

Living with a bay boat

Many owners keep a bay boat on a trailer or in dry storage, which keeps the hull clean and makes it simple to launch near the water you plan to fish that day. Rinse the boat and trailer after every saltwater outing, and keep an eye on livewell pumps, wiring and the trolling motor.

Buying tips

  • Check the hull for stress cracks and the transom for soundness.
  • Review outboard hours and records.
  • We highly recommend an independent survey on every deal.
